The Peel Harvey Catchment Council Inc. (PHCC) is changing its name to 5 Rivers NRM.  The change is to remove all reference to Thomas Peel for his heavy involvement and leadership of the Pinjarra Massacre.

The PHCC is one of 55 Natural Resource Management regional bodies recognised by the Commonwealth Government across Australia.  For 25 years, PHCC has been a community association bringing people together to work for a better environment and healthy and productive agricultural systems. The change of name is about bringing people together.

Over the years, the PHCC has had many discussions with our Bindjareb community about the on-going impact of the 1834 massacre, the continued reminder of the event, and the intergenerational trauma caused by naming the region after Peel.

His Excellency Governor Chris Dawson AC APM last year apologised to the Bindjareb people, recognising the inter-generational impacts on those who “still feel the trauma inflected on their ancestors when so many innocent lives were taken”. His Excellency pointed out how acknowledging the truth leads to healing and growth.

The 1834 Pinjarra Massacre took place on the banks of the Murray River near the town of Pinjarra.  Women, children, and the elderly were amongst the up to 80 victims of this violent slaughter.  It is recognised as one of the worst colonial massacres in the South-West of Western Australia.

Chair of PHCC, Paddi Creevey OAM said “The effects of the massacre were devastating to Bindjareb society. Acknowledging Thomas Peel by continued reference to Peel is a constant reminder of cruelty and crimes and continues to fester in the wounds of the Bindjareb people.”

After much consideration the new name ‘5 Rivers NRM’ was chosen by the Board of the PHCC.  ‘5 Rivers’ recognises the catchment of the Serpentine, Harvey, Murray, Hotham, and Wiliams Rivers that feed into the Peel-Harvey Estuary, longer known as the Bindjareb Djilba by the region’s First Nations. NRM is Natural Resource Management.

“Our Board understand that once you know the negative impact on people you can’t unknow it and removing the name Peel became the right thing to do” Paddi said.

George Walley, Bindjareb Elder spoke at the announcement of the name change. “What an amazing name. We have the best five rivers leading into the Djilba (estuary). I want to say congratulations for what you have done here to recognise how much it means to our local mobs by changing your name, to remove Thomas Peel.  Thank you.”

PHCC will be transitioning to 5 Rivers NRM over 2026.
