The award-winning uPtake project has increased farmer and industry confidence in the science behind phosphorus fertiliser recommendations by validating national critical soil test values for phosphorus (P) for south-west WA.

Peel-Harvey Catchment Council was involved with engaging our farming community over the four years of the project to participate in field trials and extension activities such as field days to build knowledge and increase confidence in the science underpinning phosphorus fertiliser recommendations.

The Peel-Harvey region had six trial sites on local farms, and ran five field days/workshops with over 141 people attending. One of the key learnings from the uPtake trials is that adding phosphorus to soils that already contain adequate phosphorus levels will not grow more pasture but will increase the risk of phosphorus leaching to the environment. By following the national critical value guidelines, you will optimise productivity and profitability whilst not jeopardising the environment. Of course, soil testing is critical to understand what your current levels are.

For more information read the summary of the trials in this online brochure: https://www.wa.gov.au/system/files/2023-06/uptake_trial_summary_6pp-a4_final.pdf

A fabulous video was also produced which gives farmer insights and trial footage. It can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhQ0JGq8U9M
