The fertiliser management project team at PHCC have had a busy and highly successful past 5 months, assisting farmers with whole-farm soil sampling on 21 properties during November and December 2022.  A further 17 properties were sampled by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), totalling 38 farms within the Peel-Harvey catchment for the 2022/23 season. Soil samples were analysed at the CSBP laboratory for key nutrients, acidity, soil texture, organic carbon and phosphorus buffering index (PBI).

Participating farmers came together at a workshop in February this year to receive their soil test results and gain valuable insight into managing soil nutrients on their property. Experts from DPIRD used a variety of novel, interactive activities to demonstrate some tricky soil chemistry concepts and introduce participants to an online ‘nutrient calculator’, an important tool designed to assist farmers’ fertilising decision-making using their soil test results. The workshop was a resounding success, with positive feedback received from all who attended.

Participating farmers will now work with their nominated agronomists to develop fertilising plans for their farms based on soil test results. This process provides farmers with the confidence that their soils are receiving what they need, keeping nutrients on their farms for production and out of waterways for waterway health. Coming up for our current participants is tissue testing and final surveys in Spring, until then the project team will start planning for our next round of farmers to do it all again!
