Dr Steve Fisher Memorial Waterways Science Scholarship

Dr Steve Fisher

Dr Steve Fisher Memorial Waterways Science Scholarship has been established to honour the memory of  Dr Steve Fisher.

Steve Fisher was the Senior Scientist at the PHCC for more than 7 years. Few people have made such a huge impression and contributed so much to our Ramsar wetlands and our community. Steve was a friend, mentor, and inspiration to many. Steve’s favourite part of his job with PHCC was working with the school kids – he inspired so many. His communication skills meant that he could explain science with passion, humour, and clarity, whether it was to grade 6 kids or Members of Parliament.

Steve connected with so many science networks and universities, supporting and attracting science for managing and protecting our wetlands. He made himself available to community organisations, school groups and so many more. Steve made a huge contribution and will not be forgotten.

Closing Date:  8 March 2026

Jessica Smith

2025 Recipient

Jessica completed her undergraduate at Murdoch, with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Molecular Biology & Genetics and Biomedical Science. After graduating in 2024, Jessica decided she would like to go into further studies to see if research was her calling.
Jessica is thoroughly enjoying her time investigating blood-borne parasites in the Carnaby Cockatoos.

Emily Stout

2024 Recipient

Emily is currently studying a master’s at Murdoch University in marine biology. She will be looking at the benthic invertebrate communities (little animals that lack a backbone such as crustaceans and worms) in the Swan Estuary Marine Park. This research will be important in understanding a major food sources for internationally protected bird populations. These birds feed and rest not only in the Swan-Canning Estuary but also in the Peel-Harvey Estuary, and important Ramsar site.

Phillipa (Pippa) Clifton

2023 Recipient

Pippa’s first degree was in Human Biology and History, which led her into five successful years working in healthcare. While Pippa experienced success, she acknowledged it wasn’t fulfilling her and after internal reflection, she sought out opportunities in the field of environmental science with a degree in Conservation and Wildlife Biology at Murdoch. Throughout these studies she discovered she had a strong resolve to dedicate her career to the safeguarding of the environment and developed a deeper appreciation for Australian biodiversity.
Pippa is now studying her honours in Conservation and Wildlife Biology and plans to commence in semester two of this year.
