The recent fires in and around our region as a result of lightning have reinforced the need for good fire planning on farms in the Peel-Harvey, and beyond. PHCC invested time in training its staff last year through the Regrarians© platform, to increase their understanding and ability to support landholders affected by or wanting to avoid the impact of bushfires.

The recent bushfires as a result of lightning in early January highlighted the need for landholders in the Peel-Harvey to plan for, know what to do and prepare to recover from fire, in a landscape which is becoming increasingly fire prone.

These fires were controlled through a combination of local landholders, local brigades and firefighters working together, but it is clear that good planning, appropriate equipment, thorough preparation and increased awareness is needed to combat future fires.

PHCC has a history of providing support for bushfire victims in the past and in late 2022 many of our staff completed a 12 month program through the Regrarians© program to increase their capacity to support landholders should they want or need it.

“The purpose of the training is to embed the understanding of fire as part of farm planning” says Darren Doherty, Director of non-profit Regrarians© Ltd, based in Victoria.

In the words of our Farmers for Fauna Coordinator Christine Townsend, “It’s extremely important that we make fire a focus in our landscape”, so that our farms, livelihoods and the plants and animals that support us are protected as much as possible in the event of an uncontrolled fire.

“People can give us a call, send an email or come and visit us in our Mandurah, Waroona or Boddington offices anytime to have a chat” says Christine.
