Future Ready Farming Kicks Off with Four Demonstration Sites Across the Region. We’ve wrapped up the first season of our Future Ready Farming project, focused on supporting landholders as they transition to Climate Smart Agriculture.

This year, we established four demonstration sites in Marradong, Quindanning, Mundijong, and West Coolup, showcasing regenerative practices including cover cropping, multi-species and perennial pastures, biologically orientated fertility, and mob grazing. Despite a late season break, the timing aligned well with contractor availability, and the final site was seeded on 29 May, just as rain began, ideal conditions for germination.

Site Overview

  • Hotham-Williams Region: 10-hectare plots in Marradong and Quindanning.
  • Swan Coastal Plain: 5-hectare plot in Mundijong and 10-hectare plot in West Coolup.

Each site was seeded with one of two specially developed pasture mixes:

  • Seed Mix 1 will be grazed only after seed set, helping increase species diversity in the soil seed bank.
  • Seed Mix 2 includes perennial species like rye grass, chicory, and plantain, and is designed to be grazed during the growing season by sheep or cattle.

Both seed blends were carefully selected by Agroecologist Mark Tupman (Productive Ecology) and prepared with a compost slurry mix enriched with Mycorrhizal fungi, seaweed granules, and a trace element solution, tailored to the specific conditions at each site.

Using our digital mapping tools, we plotted sampling transects and uploaded them into our system to generate clear and accessible site maps. These maps will support monitoring and evaluation, and will be featured in each landholder’s final report.

Soil Monitoring and Next Steps: Baseline soil tests have been completed, and we will return annually over the next three years to conduct indicator tests, plant tissue tests and track soil health improvements.

We’re now working closely with each landholder on follow-up treatments based on initial observations and test results. All of this is being documented by video which we will be sharing very soon! Keep an eye out on our socials and You-Tube channel. We plan to support more landholders with this work over the next 3 years, stayed tuned for updates.
