Local farmers had the opportunity to explore the many benefits of growing pastures and crops with diverse species at our recent field day.

Despite the wet weather, we had an amazing turn out for our Multispecies and Perennial Pasture workshop in Uduc in August.

Soil microbiology expert, Professor Lyn Abbott (UWA), and farmer/seed producer Grant Sims (Down Under Covers) shared their vast knowledge and practical experience to inform landholders on some of the functions of soil microbes and the soil health benefits of using multispecies cover crops.

From improving soil structure and water holding capacity, to breaking through compacted earth and drawing highly beneficial fungi species and nutrients to the party, the benefits of using multispecies pastures are far-reaching.

An afternoon field walk at local beef and egg producer, Blythe Calnan’s Runneymede Farm property, followed up the morning seminar session.   The farmers were so invested in learning from Grant Sims, they were reluctant to drag their soggy selves from the paddock before the sun set. Always a good sign that the day went well!

If you missed the workshop, check out Lyn and Grant’s websites, apps and podcasts to learn more. You won’t regret it!
