Grazing Matcher is a program by Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and Western Beef Association Inc. to support protein producing landholders to further understand and implement grazing practices of their farms to increase productivity and reduce wastage. In its second year in the Peel-Harvey’s Swan Coastal Plain sub-region, it is a great collaboration that uses information, hands-on learning and peer to peer learning to get great results for the farmers involved.

Grazers in the Peel-Harvey keen to match land capability with increased farm outputs have been attending the Grazing Matcher program since May and have been happy with the results so far.

The farmer-focused program is run across coastal catchments in WA’s south west region, supported by the DPIRD and delivered by Western Beef Association Inc. Topics focus on updating farmers awareness of key farm inputs, reviewing pasture growth and animal condition, plus there’s been a crash-course on the many financial and other factors that impact their ability to produce more protein from the same area of land.

Rotational Grazing, monitoring silage and hay production and understanding economic, soil and other constraints to their businesses has already led to some changes in thinking and practice

With increasing pressure on all aspects of farm businesses, the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council is proud to be working together with industry groups to provide opportunities for local farmers to be more productive and resilient to the (market, climatic and environmental) pressures they face.

The Grazing Matcher program running in the Peel-Harvey Catchment is supported by the Western Australian Government’s Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development, the Healthy Estuaries WA program and Meat & Livestock Australia’s Profitable Grazing Systems program (PGS).
