The Healthy Estuaries WA/Bindjareb Djilba Protection Plan Fertiliser Management Project has kicked off for the 2023-2024 season. Thirty five farmers have been accepted into the program, and more than two thirds have nominated to do their own soil sampling. A further 7 farmers are taking part in the project under the Soil Wise program, taking our DIY soil sampling contingent to 32 farmers, the largest number PHCC have worked with yet!

A DIY soil sampling field day was held in November with Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and PHCC staff, providing farmers with how to take their own soil samples. Landholders were given the chance to practice using drill-operated augers, which are used to take the required thirty 10 centimetre cores per paddock. They also practiced using a smart phone app developed by DPIRD which is used to track the GPS position of each core.

Since the field day, PHCC staff have been busy visiting participating farmers right across the catchment to deliver soil sampling gear and sample bags, and to assist them in sampling their first paddocks. Soil samples are already starting to come in; these samples are couriered to the CSBP Soil and Plant Analysis Laboratory in Bibra Lake to be analysed for nutrients such as phosphorous, potassium and sulphur, as well as pH, soil texture, organic carbon and phosphorous buffering index. Results will be collated early next year and presented to farmers at a workshop to be held in late February 2024.

The growing number of farmers keen to be involved in the fertiliser management project and the number who want to do soil sampling for themselves is a reflection of how committed farmers in the Peel Harvey catchment are to reducing fertiliser use to help improve the health of our waterways and estuary.
