Rob works in Waroona, researching the efficient use of nutrients to improve agricultral production and minimise the impact on water quality. This covers the high rainfall, coastal areas from the Swan Canning to Albany. Involvement in the Peel-Harvey began in 1990 as an orignal member of the Community Catchment Centre in Pinjarra. His work has included assessment of better fertilisers for sandy soils, soil amendments to retain nutrients, soil testing, the impact of stream revegetation on water quality, nutrient filters and modification to the drainage system to improve water quality. He was awarded the BHP Landcare Research and Innovative Technology Landcare Award and the Advance Australia Award for outstanding contribution to Environmental Science. Rob currently divides his time between WA and Vietnam where he coordinates a research development project on sandy soils in coastal Vietnam.
