The Keep Carnaby’s Flying Ngoolarks Forever program is now well into Year 2 in the City of Mandurah.

As part of Murdoch Uni’s Keep Carnaby’s Flying: Ngoolarks ForeverProgram, funded by Lotterywest, PHCC has been working with the City of Mandurah and Landcare SJ to deliver year 2 activities.

Year 2 is focusing our efforts on revegetation in key reserves for the birds in the City of Mandurah and installation of a bird watering station where it is most needed.

Over 5,500 native seedlings, selected as food species for Carnaby’s black cockatoos, will be planted at Marlee Reserve in winter this year to support breeding cockatoos into the future. A further 100 advanced trees will be planted at Florida Park, Cambridge Park and other reserves around Mandurah.  In addition, a watering station will be installed at Marlee Reserve to secure a fresh, clean water supply all year round that will help young and returning birds.

Murdoch University have provided flight tracking data to assist with planting site selections, through attaching GPS trackers to rehabilitated birds before they were released.  The trackers are moulted naturally after a period of time.  The data collected from the trackers shows where Carnaby’s are moving throughout the Perth-Peel landscape and identifies their most used habitat patches.

As part of the project, Murdoch will also develop a Conservation Action Plan for the City of Mandurah to guide actions for protecting the species into the future.
