The annual shorebird count in the Peel-Yalgorup System is part of the National Shorebird Monitoring Program, a national citizen science initiative that aims to gain a better understanding of the populations of the nation’s shorebirds and the threats they face. The annual count spans the 26,000 hectares of the Peel-Yalgorup system  (Internationally recognised as Ramsar Site 482). Approximately 70 highly skilled volunteers will take part in counting the shorebirds in the wetlands. Facilitated by Peel-Harvey Catchment Council (PHCC), in consultation with Birdlife WA and local birdwatchers, the annual count helps with our conservation efforts, providing an understanding of the factors affecting declining populations.

Please note this is a closed event as experience in shorebird identification and counting is required to participate – details are shared directly with count volunteers. If you are interested to learn more about the count and how you could become involved, please contact Charlie via birds@peel-harvey.org.au

We acknowledge the Noongar people as Traditional Custodians of this land and pay our respects to all Elders past and present
