Peel-Harvey Catchment Council is pleased to announce the commencement of the project ‘Supporting people for wetland wise use in the Peel-Harvey’. This project will focus on community engagement and the implementation of some of the highest priorities of the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council’s ‘Wetlands and People Plan’. The Plan is a blueprint for supporting collaboration across the many local stakeholders whose common interest is the health and well-being of the Peel-Harvey’s Ramsar listed Peel-Yalgorup Wetland System and other local wetlands.

‘Supporting people for wetland wise use in the Peel-Harvey’ is an exciting project designed to raise awareness to the wise use of wetlands by packaging a series of communication, education and participations actions strategically targeted to build stronger relationships and greater levels of participation in wetland wise use now and for the future.” said Andy Gulliver, Chair for to Peel-Harvey Catchment Council.

The focus of this project is coordination and facilitation of a suite of activities that collectively aim to create a more active, engaged, aware and informed community, resulting in improvements to ecosystem health in the longer term. Project activities will consist of a wetlands-themed arts and environment program including the local Noongar community sharing traditional knowledge through an interpretive event, a social marketing campaign designed by young for young people to facilitate behaviour change and the scaling up of citizen science initiatives for the wetlands by providing support to local community participants to gather data and knowledge.

The PHCC has secured funding via a State NRM Capability Grant.  The project will run for 18 months beginning this January.

We acknowledge the Noongar people as Traditional Custodians of this land and pay our respects to all Elders past and present
