The Peel-Harvey Biosecurity Group are gearing up for their fourth annual release of the RHDV1 K5 Calicivirus. Landholders have until the 9th of October to sign up for the control program to assist them in their efforts to eradicate those Wascally Wabbits (to quote the Loony Tune’s Elmer Fudd)!

Rabbits have been highlighted as a significant pest in the Lake Clifton Catchment since the roll out of our ‘Lake Clifton Stewardship Project’ in 2017. With landholders involved in community events such as the Lake Clifton Seedling Giveaway and participants in the Land for Wildlife Program noting Rabbits as one of the top management issues for their properties.

The Peel-Harvey Biosecurity Group’s annual Rabbit Control Program is a great way for landholders to get involved in proactively managing this environmental and agricultural pest. The free program offers support to landholders as they move through four steps of rabbit control using the RHDV1 K5 virus: 1. pre feeding, 2. pre monitoring, 3. inoculating of pellets; and 4. post monitoring.

The fifth step in successful rabbit control comes from follow up efforts to maintain control of rabbit populations as their numbers start to grow after the initial knock down caused by the virus. Further steps for rabbit control can include baiting, trapping and warren destruction. Combining these methods with the release of the calicivirus can prove to be a very effective management strategy for controlling rabbit populations.

Lake Clifton Landholders registered with the voluntary Land for Wildlife Program currently have the opportunity to seek funding from $200 up to $1,000 through the Lake Clifton Stewardship Grants, to assist  their efforts to protect and enhance natural bushland on their properties. Activities targeting pest species such as rabbits are eligible through this grant program along with a number of other Landcare activities including revegetation and installation of artificial habitat structures.
