Soil sampling is an evolving technique to improve farm productivity and reduce inputs. A total of 34 properties are currently participating in the 2021/22 Healthy Estuaries WA soil sampling program, which provides local farmers with incredibly valuable knowledge of their land. The program aims to reduce unnecessary fertiliser use where it is not needed – not only to protect our waterways from fertiliser runoff, but to also ensure farmers are best utilising their inputs.

No two farms are the same, meaning the fertiliser requirements of each property will vary. The foundation to properly understand what a property requires and in what quantities is carefully designed soil sampling and analysis. On November 5, a total of 25 local farmers attended a DIY soil testing field day in Waroona to learn how to sample their properties as a part of PHCC’s testing program. It was encouraging to see the property owner’s willingness to learn the correct way to take soil cores to ensure a representative sample of each of their paddocks is produced.

Since the field day PHCC have been meeting with these landholders to understand their current fertiliser decisions, and what influences these decisions. Once the farmers have concluded the program (which involves soil analysis, plant tissue testing, agronomic advice as well as a workshop to interpret all results), they will have a good understanding of what nutrients are needed on their farm in 2022, and will have the information they need to make informed fertiliser choices.

The program will be running again next year, if you are interested be sure to follow Peel Harvey Catchment Council on Facebook or contact Megan LeRoy (megan.leroy@peel-harvey.org.au) to be added to our mailing list.

This project is a part of Healthy Estuaries WA – a State Government Royalties for Regions program that aims to improve the health of our South West estuaries.
