Rumen8-Beef is a freely available new computer software designed to support Beef producers with efficient supplement decisions. A Dairy version has been available for many years and is used by thousands of producers and advisors in over 60 countries.

A workshop to train producers and advisors to use the software has been developed as part of Western Beef Association’s Better Hay and Silage Project, funded by the Federal government under the Future Drought Fund. The workshop will be offered to Peel-Harvey producers on Wednesday 28 February (9am-4pm) in Mandurah in partnership with the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council.

Participants will learn how to use the program for efficient hay and silage allocation. It allows the user to upload their own feed test values or use preloaded feeds. The program can be used to compare different scenarios, estimate animal growth and how much feed stock will need. The program also allows user to upload saleyards and abattoirs prices to support cost effective decisions.

Rumen8-Beef differential from existing programs is that it’s freely available and applies more than one nutritional parameter (most existing programs use only energy) in its calculations, so estimates of feed quantity needed, and stock response are far more accurate. That allows producers to plan to whether they have enough feed, need to sell stock or purchase more feed.

The workshop cost will be $30 per person ($20 for Western Beef’s financial members) and includes: notes, morning and afternoon tea and lunch. Participants need to bring their own computer, as part of the workshop will feature practical sessions using the software with facilitators available to assist and answer questions. The workshop format is for a maximum of 15 participants. For more information and to book your spot contact Western Beef’s executive officer on Jeisane.alis@gmail.com or on  0403327216.
